Jeddah airport to Makkah for Umrah: train, bus, taxi and mobile data
Most pilgrims heading to Makkah land at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah. Makkah is roughly 85 km away by road. Here are the main ways to make the trip, and how to be connected as soon as you land.
Your options
| Option | What to know |
|---|---|
| Haramain high-speed train | The airport has its own Haramain station connected to the terminal. The train runs to Makkah station, and from there you need a taxi or bus to your hotel. Check timetables and book seats on the official Haramain railway site, especially in Ramadan. |
| Bus | Intercity buses run from the airport to Makkah. They are usually the cheapest option but can be slow, with waits before departure. |
| Taxi or ride-hailing | Door to door. Taxi prices are often agreed rather than metered, so settle the price before you set off. |
| Pre-booked transfer | A driver meets you at arrivals with a fixed price agreed in advance. Useful for families, late arrivals and heavy luggage (including Zamzam water on the way back). |
By road the trip usually takes around an hour, and can take two hours or more at peak times such as Ramadan.
Ihram before you land
Pilgrims flying to Jeddah for Umrah usually pass the miqat in the air before landing, so many enter ihram before boarding or on the plane, when the crew announces it. Rulings depend on your route and school of thought, so check with your scholar or Umrah agent before you travel.
Mobile data when you land
- eSIM: if your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to a carrier, you can buy a Saudi data eSIM before you fly and switch it on when you land. Handy for maps, ride-hailing and the Nusuk app.
- Local SIM: Saudi carriers such as STC, Mobily and Zain sell SIM cards at the airport and in town. You will need your passport to register.
Add it to your budget
Put your transport quote and any SIM or eSIM cost into the Umrah cost calculator under transport and extras to see the full cost of your trip.
