What changes the cost from the UK
- Flights: pilgrims from the UK usually fly from London, Manchester and Birmingham to Jeddah (for Makkah) or Madinah. Fares are highest in Ramadan and school holidays.
- Hotels: a hotel within walking distance of the Haram costs much more than one a bus ride away. Splitting a room between family members lowers the cost per person.
- Visa and insurance: the Umrah visa is issued through the official Nusuk platform with mandatory medical insurance. Check the current fee on Nusuk before you pay.
- Exchange rate: hotel and transport prices in Saudi Arabia are set in riyals, so a change in the pounds sterling rate changes your total.
Package or plan it yourself?
If you buy an Umrah package in the UK, check that it is ATOL protected, as the Civil Aviation Authority advises for packages that include flights. Booking independently gives more control but no package protection.
