What changes the cost from the USA
- Flights: pilgrims from the USA usually fly from New York, Washington, Chicago, Houston and other hubs to Jeddah (for Makkah) or Madinah. Fares are highest in Ramadan and school holidays.
- Hotels: a hotel within walking distance of the Haram costs much more than one a bus ride away. Splitting a room between family members lowers the cost per person.
- Visa and insurance: the Umrah visa is issued through the official Nusuk platform with mandatory medical insurance. Check the current fee on Nusuk before you pay.
- Exchange rate: hotel and transport prices in Saudi Arabia are set in riyals, so a change in the US dollars rate changes your total.
Package or plan it yourself?
Flights from the USA are long and often involve a connection, so the flight is usually the biggest part of the budget. Booking early and staying flexible on dates helps the most.
